Materials

Patina

A surface appearance that develops naturally over time through ageing, use, exposure and environmental conditions.

What is Patina?

Patina describes the changes that occur on a material's surface as it ages. On leather, this may include changes in colour, sheen and texture caused by handling, oils and use.

Wood and metal can also develop distinctive patinas through oxidation, exposure and ageing. The appearance and rate of development depend on the material and its finish.

Patina is generally considered a desirable characteristic when it adds depth and individuality to a material.

Why Does Patina Matter?

Patina can give furniture a unique appearance that becomes more distinctive with age and use.
