Lumbar Support

A chair feature designed to support the natural inward curve of the lower back.

What is Lumbar Support?

Lumbar support is a feature of a chair backrest designed to support the natural inward curve of the lower spine. It helps the lower back maintain a more supported and comfortable position while seated.

Lumbar support can be fixed or adjustable. Adjustable lumbar support allows the user to change its height or depth so that it better matches their individual body shape and preferred sitting position.

The effectiveness of lumbar support depends on more than the presence of a lumbar cushion or contour. Its position, depth, firmness and compatibility with the chair's backrest and seat geometry all affect how well it supports the user.

Why Does Lumbar Support Matter?

Properly positioned lumbar support can improve the fit and comfort of a chair, particularly when it is used for extended periods. Adjustable lumbar support provides greater flexibility because users can position the support according to their body shape and sitting preference.
