A distressed finish is created by intentionally adding visual or physical characteristics that make a furniture surface appear aged or naturally worn. Techniques may include sanding, brushing, staining, rubbing or selectively removing layers of finish.
Distressing can be applied to materials such as solid wood, veneers and painted furniture. The appearance can range from subtle variations to a heavily weathered aesthetic.
Because distressing is intentionally irregular, individual furniture pieces may have variations in colour, texture and surface markings.
