Bentwood

Wood that has been shaped into curved forms through controlled bending, steaming or moulding processes.

What is Bentwood?

Bentwood furniture is made by forming wood into curved shapes rather than relying solely on straight timber components. Steam bending is one traditional technique in which wood is softened using heat and moisture before being shaped around a mould.

Bentwood construction is commonly associated with chair backs, armrests, frames and curved furniture components.

The type of wood, moisture content, grain orientation, thickness and bending process all influence the final result.

Why Does Bentwood Matter?

Bentwood construction allows furniture designers to create curved forms that combine structural function with distinctive visual design.
